Adult Autism Assessment: What to Expect
Some adults consider an autism assessment after recognising long-standing patterns in the way they experience social situations, sensory environments, relationships, work or study. For others, the question arises after a family member is diagnosed or after previous treatment has not fully explained their experiences.
An autism assessment is a detailed process. It is designed to build a broad understanding of your history, strengths, current needs and day-to-day functioning rather than relying on one questionnaire or one appointment.
What may be included in an adult autism assessment?
The exact assessment plan is tailored to the individual. It may include:
A clinical interview with you
Interviews with a parent, partner, adult child or another person who can provide developmental or background information
Questionnaires relating to autism, mental health, executive functioning, functional capacity and independence skills
Review of previous professional reports and relevant school, university, work or mental health documentation
Contact with current treating professionals, where helpful and with your consent
A feedback session to explain the findings, discuss recommendations and consider possible next steps
There is often information to review after the interview sessions. The psychologist may need to seek further information before reaching a final conclusion, so the outcome is not always available on the day of the first interview.
Do I need a referral?
The referral pathway depends on your circumstances. You may wish to speak with your GP about a medical evaluation and whether a referral for assessment is appropriate. If you are already under the care of a psychiatrist, it may be helpful to discuss your concerns with them before beginning the clinical psychology assessment.
What information may be helpful?
If available, previous psychological or developmental reports, school records, university or workplace information and details of current treating professionals may help provide context. The psychologist may also ask whether someone who knows you well can provide information about your early development and life history.
You do not need to have every document ready before making an enquiry. The practice will explain what is relevant for your circumstances.
What happens in the feedback session?
After your assessment is complete, your psychologist will schedule a feedback session with you to discuss the results, along with any relevant recommendations and resources. Where a diagnosis is made, your psychologist will explain what it may mean for you in practical terms. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss possible supports and next steps.
What report will I receive?
The adult autism assessment includes a comprehensive diagnostic report. Adult clients can review a draft and provide feedback to ensure their self-reported information has been presented sensitively and consistently with their needs.
Reports are usually completed within 6-10 weeks after the final appointment, subject to the assessor's caseload. The report is issued after full payment has been received.
What is the indicative cost?
The total cost of an adult autism assessment typically ranges from $2,800 to $3,080 before any eligible rebates. Face-to-face time is billed at $280 per hour, and indirect assessment work and comprehensive report writing are charged at a fixed cost of $1,400. The total face-to-face time may vary depending on the complexity of the assessment.
You may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for part of the face-to-face assessment time, depending on your referral and circumstances. A private health insurer may also cover part of the assessment. Medicare does not provide rebates for diagnostic reports or non-face-to-face assessment work.
